Where to have a GTG in Kyoto
We are planning to meet up with Shelley and her DH one evening in Kyoto. I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion for a restaurant. Looking for moderately priced, able to accommodate my "no msg" requirement.
We'd love some suggestions!

Touzan in the basement of the Hyatt Regency might be the ticket. Very good food, Japanese cuisine, pleasant atmosphere, and a staff that will speak English about as well as you can find in Kyoto. Touzan has both a bar and a restaurant; you can order from the restaurant menu if you choose to sit in the bar.

Hi Kavey- Sorry you can't join us. Could you please tell me what are google pins and how do you use them during your trip. I'm sorry to say that although I can use a computer, I am technologically challenged.

I wrote a little about this place with the "fire" ramen a few years back on one of our first Kyoto trips. Small, inexpensive venue but sure was fun and the proprietor is a hoot. Not much English spoken but they have English warning signs for you, lol. The name of the ramen restaurant is Men Baka Ichidai ramen shop and you can see a demo on utube here:

You have to order the negi ramen(scallions or green onions) to get the fire show. All others will be seated on the tables you see behind in the picture.
Maybe we can get Bob to sit right up front lol
Aloha!

Lol
It's on a street perpendicular to Nijo-jo in the general area. See here for google map and address. Just look for the blue sign and a line of people outside staring into the window lol

Hi Shelley
I use Google My Places to create a map, and I make pins (like the ones that show when you search for an address on Google Maps) to represent all the key places - train stations, hotels I've booked, major sights, restaurants I particularly want to visit. It also lets me change the symbols for the pins so I have train ones for stations, beds for hotels, knife and fork for restaurants, shopping basket for shops or markets, coffee cups for cafes, flasks for breweries/ distilleries, a particular shape building for temples and so on.
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any option to save the maps as offline versions for Japan, but we are taking our little Nexus tablet, as we did last time and we've rented a mobile wifi device very cheaply, so we can go online and check the maps easily.
Last year, we did this in the hotel when planning the day and occasionally, when out and about and lost as well.
