Does anyone know why the food is so disappointing in Burma? I've almost never had a bad meal in SE Asia! The thought of 2 weeks of bad food is putting a damper on my enthusiasm.

Well after the holidays I can use a few days of mediocre food and wine - so its no big deal. Spending the last two nights in Bangkok so the food will be good there.

It's not that the food is bad. I had some very tasty dishes in the local street-side stalls and open-air restaurants. (you will see fried samosa and "samosa salad" everywhere and it is fabulous!)

Just that there is far less variety than you might be used to in other SE Asian areas. And in my opinion, the actual restaurants were not very good. Yangon's Golden Duck is often touted as among the better chinese restaurants but I've had far better Chinese meals in New York City, not to mention China or Thailand.

For one thing, I was told that their agriculture is far less diverse than in neighboring countries. I think Thailand has developed irrigation systems, for one thing. Or so I was told. I'm certainly not an agriculture expert! And there has certainly not been a big restaurant culture in Burma, as there has been in other SE countries. Surely that will change.
