Where in Bangkok?

Well, I'll be passing through Bangkok again - four times, in fact. I've just booked the new Ibis Riverside (agoda.com, $45 incl. tax) for the night between Singapore and Georgetown, but it's the wrong side of the river and a bit far from public transport. The Menam Riverside where I stayed last time is now owned by Ramada and costs too much.

So, if the river is out, what area would you suggest? I'll have three nights between Georgetown and Laos, one between Laos and Hanoi, and two between Hanoi and London. I won't be shopping (aside from guide books (KSR) and toiletries (any mall)), although I could do a little window shopping. I'm thinking I might revisit the Palace and Jim Thompson's House, and I definitely want to eat some good food - Thai food. I'm aiming for under $50/night. BTW, didn't Ratt open a guesthouse? Anyone stayed there?

Yes, Rat did open a guesthouse. There was a report here from someone - as I remember the guesthouse was very nice, but a bit far from transportation.

Also check for any "crazy deals" from www.asiarooms.com

how about the bossotel, less than a minute from the shangrila. i think agoda might have it for $45. i've stayed there a couple of times, and like the hotel, and location. easy walk to taksin bts, and next door to the center point silom.

Hi Thursday: If you want some good seafood and other Thai dishes in a place with few or no tourists, try Lek, which is on the street below the Chong Nonsi station of the Skytrain.

The Ibis Riverside has a free shuttle to the BTS station. It also has an excellent views and location on the Chao Praya River with ferry and skytrain services just five minutes away. IMO, it's best to book directly with the hotel for better amenities and future recognition:

Not when you get a better rate elsewhere! And I'll give then my Accor number when I check in.

The free shuttle runs between 8am and 8pm to the station on their side of the river. Walking distance is 10-15 minutes. So the location is good if you don't mind being on the other side of the river. Personly I like the Bossotel for its great location although it is an older hotel, not new like the Ibis.

Thursday, go to latestays.com and click on Silom. At least, if you're going to have a crappy hotel, it'll be in the middle of things. Why you'd choose the other side of the river is beyond me.

I've stayed at Glitz a few times.

@ thursdaysd ... Most hotel chains with loyalty programs have a PRG feature nowadays.

Also, even if you present your card at check-in, when booking through “discounted” third party, the only credit you’ll get is for any incidental spend during your stay. You won’t get any credit for the stay, nights, stays, or points for monies paid to the third party for accommodations, be it Latestays, Orbits, Agoda, etc.

Kalil_Daoud -I'll take the cheaper rate any time, I don't stay at Accor properties very often.

dogster - that reservation is just for one night between two flights. I'm looking elsewhere for my other nights, but I'd like one night on the river regardless of which side.

I'm a little mystified at your SIN/BKK/Georgetown connection - but mine not to reason why...

Who cares. Enjoy Sri Lanka tomorrow.

The SIN-BKK is on the AA award and I can't change the routing. I was going to take the night train both ways to Georgetown but I found a cheap flight BKK-Georgetown. I'll return on the train - I actually want to ride it one way.

I hope to enjoy Sri Lanka, I got bumped to a backup hotel my last night in India, plus I had another driver who didn't want to listen me, and I'm not in the best of moods. I hope Kingfisher lives up to your description....
