Where did you get your Chinese visa?
Can you tell us how you get your Chinese visa for tourist travel?
Since I am not near any cities with a Chinese Consulate, I have to entrust a travel agent to do that. Any suggestions? There are 3 websites of travel/visa agents on the Chinese Embassy web page. Did anyone use them? What is your experience?

I did the same as Shangainese. I live in the Toronto suburbs and couldn't be bothered going downtown (twice) to get our visas. We paid the travel agency to do it. I must admit I was a little nervous giving them our passports but they do tons of visas a week since they are a Chinese agency and specialize in travel to China.

Hello, Betty:
Please let me know when you plan to visit northern California and we can do a GTG, in fact we have one going on tonight, Faina, Paula 1970, easytraveler ... at a nice italian restaurant off Union Square with to die for tiramisu.
Just post on the US - California forum, something like GTG/city/date/food choices, and leave the rest to local Fodorites!

My wife and I got our Chinese visas from <www.OasisChinaVisa.com> in April this year. We were quite satisfied with their prompt service and price. At least in April, '06, this agency was listed in the Chinese Embassy website.

A GTG in SF!! Wish I could come!!
Thanks, lxchiang. Oasis is one of the three listed on the Chinese Embassy website. I am just nervous about mailing my passport to some unknown agent from the website.
Did anyone else use those from the Chinese Embassy website?

we used a visa service last year. I can't remember the name but if you google visa services a lot will come up. The fee is worth it just make sure you have a photocopy of your passport before you send it out and make sure your mail is trackable so that you know where the passport is in the process of getting it to the agency. It all went smoothly though. Good luck!

rkkwan and knowledgeable fodorites:
I hope you can comment on this please: I am thinking of applying for the chinese visa from Hong Kong. I'll be there for about a week, but it is during the christmas/new year holidays. Do you think I have enough time to get the visa?

Nancy - The official site for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong is here:
www.fmcoprc.gov.hk/chn/lsfw/default.htm
The address is 26 Harbour Road, Lower Block China Resource Building 7/F. It's close to Wan Chai MTR or Wan Chai Ferry.
They offer three types of service. Faster, the more expensive. www.fmcoprc.gov.hk/chn/lsfw/wgrqz/t54811.htm
Regular: 3 working days (Apply Monday, pickup Wednesday)
Expedited: 2 working days (Apply Monday, pickup Tuesday)
Emergency: Same day. Must show same day train/plane ticket.
Visa applications are taken Monday to Friday except Hong Kong public holidays, which for your trip means Mon 12/25/06, Tues 12/26/06 and Mon 1/1/07.
Count your days carefully, but if you have a week in Hong Kong, you should be able to get one in time.

nancy - No. FMCOPRC is the official Chinese issuer of all visas. CTS is a travel agent owned by the Chinese government. CTS will charge you a small service fee, and the visa still is issued by FMCOPRC.
