I often use sawadee, which takes a one night deposit once they confirm my reservation, then the remainder of the full payment approximately 2 weeks before the scheduled arrival date. I've never paid in full at the time of reservation with them. Some booking sites take a one night deposit, then you pay the balance to the hotel when you check out. Each site is different (I think asiarooms requires full payment at the time of confirmation), and different hotels have different policies as well. At the highest season, I have had bookings with hotels directly sometimes require a one night (or more) deposit.

While I often find the booking sites have the best prices, that isn't always true. Like Kim, I've found booking with the hotel directly sometimes has the best price (case in point: The E&O in Penang). Hotels do run their own specials.
