When, oh when, will Japan open for travelers?

A friend posted this story to explain why she thought there was no way that travelers would be allowed in to Japan this year? This is just May. Does it not seem possible that by late fall conditions might be better?

It does not seem possible. Maybe next May. They have a mess over there and I don't see how they will get out of it. The Olympics can only make it worse.

Ask again next May and I might have my doubts about 2022.

I see the glass half-full. If the Olympics can be held successfully this summer, then Japan may open its border for tourism by the end of 2021.

I have been speaking with my son almost daily since he and his family moved there in December. He does not think it will be opened until 2022. They live in Fukutsu (Fukuoka) and he said the Virus is continuing to spike and it appears they do not have an organized plan yet for distribution of the vaccine, much like the US was when starting our rollout. He said some neighborhoods are leaving it to the neighborhood leaders to set appointments for everyone. In his case, that is about 20 families. I am not sure if that includes all ages or just the seniors that are supposed to be receiving it first. I am sure they will get a better plan as the vaccine is more readily available.

I have a friend there as well who is worried about how things are developing there now. He just emailed me three days ago. The virus is spreading.

I emailed a friend I have there and he said things are not good, that the virus is spreading so not sure about opening any time soon. See the chart above. Lots of hot spots.
