When is the best month to go?

When is the best time to visit Guilin Hills and Yangtze River?

You are probably missing the best time of the year to Yangtze. It gets cold after Sep. May is probably the best month. Guilin is warm all year round. I went there in Apr.

China has four distinct seasons as in the US - it can be VERY cold in the winter, and VERY hot and humid in the summer. The temperature is best in the spring and fall, but the spring is also the rainy season, so fall is what I generally recommend to people.

The best tool I've found for weather is at the following link:

http://www.weather.com/activities/travel/averages.html?from=footer

Guilin's weather is here:

http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/climatology/CHXX0434

It says that in April and May the temperature is in the 70's, but there is an average of 7 inches of rain per month. The temp is also in the 70's in October, but it only averages 4 inches of rain.

Just be sure to avoid the first week in October, which is a national holiday - the busiest time all year for all tourist attractions.

Definitely around October and November the weather is very comfortable. Also, it's during their harvesting season - LOTS of fruits in the market!

The best time is September and October, no doubt about. May is not the best month for picture taking. Temperatures are comfortable and humidity drops sharply in the fall compared with the summer months. The water flow of both rivers becomes stable and just about perfect for cruising, while during the summer the Li River may be temporaily shut down (it happened again this year) due to sudden rise of water level. In the minds of local officials, tourists' safety always comes first. This is particularly true in Guilin, which arguably is the best managed tourist city in China.
