When are the most affordable times to travel?
I am really interested in visiting Japan and China. Those are two of my international places that I would just LOVE to see!
But I am really confused about what is the high or low season for travel, and what is a good price for a flight from SFO to Tokyo, Taipei, Beijing, etc.
I would love to hear your suggestions. Thank you in advance!

In very general terms, for air, if you're flying coach, then Christmas and summer holiday times are highseason. Fall and spring are cheaper. US-China can be have for <$900.
If you're flying business class, then it's the reverse. Summer and Christmas are often cheap (e.g. under $3,000 on Continental EWR-HKG during Chrismtas), while spring/fall are expesnive.

There are often promotions (departing from Asia) for flights around x-mas. For the past several years, I was often able to find RT flights from PVG or PEK to New York in the $800 range around this time.
I'm not so sure about those originating from the US side though.

Just to add to rkkwan's comments, fares can be expensive when locals take their holidays. This means you're better off avoiding Chinese New Year (usually late Jan/Feb) in China. For Japan, avoid "Golden Week" in late Apr/early May.
In addition, summer (July/Aug) and 20Dec-5Jan therearound are high season. Not sure about SFO specific, but many airlines offer promotion on less busy seasons, like February, June and November.
