What to take on my trip?

Me and my husband are planning our first trip to Asia. We plan on doing a 4 week tour of southeast Asia. Any thoughts on what to take. Type of clothes, backpack, luggage. You know, the usual stuff. Thanks

I have traveled a number of times to S.E. Asia and China. Two things that I ALWAYS carry on me at all times are: a packet of Kleenex and some packets of Handi-wipes. (Soap and toilet paper are items that are generally missing from the public restrooms.)

Make sure you take a Swiss Army Knife - a good one with lots of stuff built in. Earplugs is a must. I found an article at www.footloosetravel.com quite helpful with regards what to take. You may want to check this out. Good luck

A hat and sunscreen are also useful. Take along clothes that are light, cool, and can be washed by hand. The TravelSmith catalog has a wide selection. There website is www.travelsmith.com. Rick Steve's book, "Asia Through the Backdoor" is also an invaluable resource on what to pack and wear.

Beth,

I know it's hard, but try to take as little as possible. I found when I was in Asia last year that, because clothes are so cheap, you buy loads there, so don't pack you're rucksack too full before you leave! Toilet paper is definately a must.

Enjoy your trip!

I'll add one suggestion to all the others. Don't forget a travel-size umbrella. I live in S/E Asia and it can rain HARD here, and sometimes with very little warning.

Beth,
Hate to be a party pooper so to speak, but think first before taking a bunch of toilet paper as others suggest. If you encounter a "squat toilet " on your trip, it probably will not have toilet paper (instead, a bucket of water to cleanse yourself). Because of the design of the toilet, paper will frequently stop it up. Please don't be the ugly American that goes around stopping up the local's toilets. Learning to do it the Asian way is not that hard and in some respects, better for you.
I was in SE Asia last year, and one thing I wish I had taken was a small tape recorder to record the sounds of the jungle, cities, conversation, and music. Have fun. Keith

dear beth,

definitely do not forget bug repellant. i get really bad reactions (ESPECIALLY to the mosquitoes in asia) and also have to carry about antihistamine cream and pills. and if you are backpacking and doing laundry along the way, southeast asia is very humid, so bring the lightest possible clothes and towels. also if you are visiting temples, you might need a light wrap for shoulders/long pants-- but you can pick these items up very cheaply as you go. have fun.
