What to expect at customs going into Narita?

I am travelling to Japan for the first time, coming from the U.S., and I would like to know what to expect going through customs. Do they search through your bags? Do I need to have a couple Japanese phrases to make things go smoothly? I won't have much luggage and I won't be carrying anything that I think needs to be declared on entry. Please advise! Thanks :)

Been to Japan half a dozen times and never had any problem.

Bonjour Jehan,

Don't worry about customs. At most, they might give a cursory look into your bags, but most likely you'll be waved through.

Have a good trip and enjoy your stay.

Thank you for your quick replies! This is my first trip overseas, so there are many unknowns. The reassurance is helpful. I am looking forward to my trip (only 4 days to departure!).

Jehan,

Your first stop after leaving customs and before taking the train or bus to downtown Tokyo must be at the TIC (tourist information center). Ask them for free maps, leaflets and informations. Take a sample of their "tourist's language handbook".
