What to do in or around Hua Hin until going to BKK for a 1:20 AM flight

We will be in Hua Hin our last day in Thailand and have a flight out of BKK at 1:20 AM. I am debating on whether to book that night at the hotel so we have a place to stay until we leave around 7:00-8:00 PM to head to BKK or to check out and find something to do. If there is some sightseeing we could do on the way and our driver will agree to take us, that might be an option. Any suggestions?

Richard, I would book the hotel. There isn't really a great deal to do around Hua Hin. Just use the time to relax around the pool before the drive back and the flight. Hotel costs in thailand are relatively cheap- you may find some excursion you want to go on but atleast you won't have to worry about vacating your room early and will have somewhere to freshen up in.

Which hotel? Will give an idea of whether they would give you a late check out or not. If they want to charge you a whole day I would go to some Spa and see if you can leave your baggage and relax there with some aromatherapy and shower/change before your journey.

We got a 6pm check-out from the Chom View, nothing extra, so it really depends on where you are staying / what the room cost is. If you are staying in a place that charges B 1,500 - 2,000 a night I agree, just stay on, pay, don't worry about it, but if they want to charge you like 4-5,000 then I would make another arrangement. What 'some' hotels do and this applies anywhere in the world ) is even if you are on a package deal or you have a promotion/discount rate they will try and charge you their full 'rack rate' for the extra time.

James - I have not booked a hotel yet, but I will be using my frequent stay points at either the Hyatt, Hilton or Marriott. I would prefer the Marriott, but am short of the required points at the moment. Have enough points for Hyatt or Hilton to book the extra night. Is there no place to go to on the way to BKK even if a little out of the way?

As a "preferred" guest (ie, you belong to the frequent stay program), I would guess that any of these hotels would give you a late check out as long as they aren't full. I'm assuming that you have an international flight, so need to be at the airport 2 hours in advance, and the drive from Hua Hin is about 2 1/2 hours, so you'll probably want to leave Hua Hin some time between 8 and 9.

When I was last at Hua Hin, I stayed at the Hyatt (a beautiful property!), and asked for a late check out, probably about 4 or 5 pm, and they were glad to accommodate me.

Well Kathie has your answer, although I have only 'visited' the Hyatt as opposed to staying it is a well managed place, you can tell that from the staff attitude. I would certainly go for the Hyatt out of those 3, the Hilton is somewhat of a block, well, a skyscraper, the Marriott is very nice but if you have enough points then I would just bang-in for the Hyatt. They have huge gardens and even if they are full and cannot extend check-out 'too' much a good idea is to go and have a nice relaxing aromatherapy massage and manicure/pedicure etc and then you at least get to shower and change!!
I would leave 7.30 pm latest as any night delays on the road could affect your arrival time at the airport. Where we stay is just along from the Hyatt.

Thanks to all. I'll email the hotel and ask about a late check-out once I have decided which one. I do like the Hyatt but I like the location of the Marriott better.

Which 'points' are you using? Do you have anything that alolows you 'Accor' Hotels? You might not have spotted it, but if so then the Sofitel might be an option too.

James - the points I have come from staying at the respective hotels, being Hyatts, Marriotts and Hiltons. I have not stayed at any Accor hotels and have no points for them.
