Also, do Canadian citizens need a visa for Taiwan (or is a passport on arrival) enough? Taiwan is free for Western tourists right? up to 6 months?

No budget airlines. But many many flights a day (like ~50, all widebodies), and price is very competitive among the majors that fly this route - Cathay, Dragonair, China Airlines and EVA. Thai also flies this route once a day.

No visa required for Canadian or US citizens for tourist visit under 14 days. This is based on info on various visa services and unofficial Taiwan tourism sites.

There are also another ~15 flights a day from Macau (MFM), on Air Macau and EVA. But since prices from HKG is so competitive, it's usually not worth the trouble.

It used to be no visa required for less than 14-day visit to Taiwan. It has been extended to 30 days now.

Is there anything outside around the airport where I can just go walk around and look? How about a brief taxi ride? Is that feasible, if so how much should I expect to pay? Do most of the cab drivers speak English?

Ooops... Ignore my above reply, too quick on the trigger finger. I meant to for another post.
