North and South have different weather. Start by reading a guidebook like free online www.frommers.com first. You don't really need a travel agency. It's easy to arrange on your own. Check out suggested itineraries on Frommers.com as well.

Take a look at www.weatherbase.com for weather info. Cookie is right the weather in different parts of VN vary due to being affected by different monsoons.

Once you've done some reading and know which places you are most interested in, check weatherbase to decide when to plan your trip.

I'm not fond of Frommers. I recommend the Lonely Planet guide even though I'm not a backpacker because of it's level of detail about off-the-beaten-track places.

I've been to Vietnam 3 times either in Jan. or Feb. from South to North. Those would be the months I would choose.
Yes, you can do it yourself, but I found with Vietnmese guide and driver it introduced me to the country in a way I could have never experienced on my own.

As mentioned above, determine where you want to go, then research the weather. Jan-Feb are nice in the South, but in Sapa, it will be quite cold.
