Whale meat in Japan

In one of my previous trip to Japan I had whale meat, and it was one of the most delicious food I ever tasted. I'm planning another trip to Japan this fall and wonder if anyone can recommend me a restaurant where I can have whale sashimi. I'm aware that some of you might be offended by my request, but this is one of those quilty pleasures I could only enjoy once every few years.

You know, I live in Asia and there are CONSTANTLY ads on TV about the eating of whale/shark/turtle/other meat and how all these animals are becoming endangered because people are eating them. I believe there is now an international ban on whaling (which Japan is trying to contest), so if you eat whale meat when you are there you are supporting illegal whaling.

Just thought you might like to know.

Bonjour Barry,

I don't have any addresses but I'm sure the TIC will have a list of restaurant serving whale meat. I know there are a few around Tsukiji market in Tokyo.

I have no objection to eating whale meat per se, but to the hypocrisy of the whaling industry and the autorities in Japan on that matter. It is true that whaling has always been a tradition around Japan, but claiming its protection demands to kill such a number for "research", the research having much more to do with trying to find out "how many whales can be caught in one season and what is its market price" than with comportmental science, and as far as Antarktika, can't be taken seriously.

In that respect, I can agree with those who object to eating whale in Japan.

There are plenty of whales to go around. Those who claim otherwise or say they don't taste very good are lying to you; they only want to hog all the delicious whales for themselves. Have you read the book "To Serve Whalekind" ? It's a cookbook!
