Westin or Sheraton in Bangkok

We will be staying in Bangok in March, using Starwood miles for our hotel. We currently have reserved the Sheraton Royal Orchid, which we stayed at before and loved. I have just seen that there is a new Westin Grande Sukhumvit in Bangkok, and am wondering if we should think about staying there since it is in the center of Bangkok. We really enjoyed the river view at the Sheraton. Is the area around the Sukhumvit interesting enough to make it worth the change? How do the hotels compare?

I always stay on the river - it's what makes it Bangkok for me. I've checked out some of the hotels away from the river (like the Grand Hyatt) and while they are very nice, they are in the middle of the busy city and just don't feel special to me. I always stay at the Royal Orchid (in the Towers).

maybe the westin has taken over the former sheraton --sheraton grande sukumvit...the area is a busy one and the hotel is beautiful, but i prefer to stay on the river also...kathie and i disagree about which hotel, but that is beside the point...
would you consider staying at both hotels to add variety to your stay...i would spend the longer period on the river, but i do occasionally stay at the jw marriott on sukumvit and like it because everything i want to do in that area is so close....the same thing would hold true for the westin grande....it is a great location...i believe the skytrain is just outside the hotel..i am not surprised that they have changed it to a westin as westin is generally a notch above sheraton and this is a nice hotel....

i have made a mistake...i just looked at the starwood site and see that there is both a sheraton grande and a westin grande on sukumvit....i do not know what the westin is? perhaps it is a conversion from another hotel?? the former westin was the banyon tree on silom or sathorn, but that dropped the westin name last year...???
sorry to mislead you...

The Grand Pacific hotel just opposite the Sheraton Grande was taken over by Westin and is now called the Westin Grand Pacific.

Thanks all. We've decided to stay with the Sheraton. Much as we like to have a different geographical perspective, we just can't give up the river view! You don't even have to leave the room to sightsee there.
FYI if you like river views and are going to Shanghai and don't need a concierge, consider the Panorama hotel with an upper floor. It is quite reasonable, and reminded us of the Sheraton in Bangkok.
