weight loss resort (not yet last resort)

I am looking for a resort which has a weight loss program with medical supervision.

I am 66, past the obesity line with type II diabetes and taking blood pressure drugs

I do not believe in ayurvedic or holistic methods or medicine.

I do not believe in the utility of colon cleansing and related detox programs.

I would not enjoy a harshly disciplined environment, with too many restrictions.

Would prefer beach but will consider inland also.

My wife, 51, will be with me, and may be interested in some rejuvenation treatments.

we would both like to be pampered

we are looking for a friendly location with interesting sites in reach.

Our budget is not unlimited. But we can consider about $3,000/week all inclusive and including a massage each/day and any treatments.

I will truely appreciate it very much if Thailand experts and any forumists who have experience or knowledge of such institutions respond. (can actually consider other countries as long as they have possibility of good weather in January)

I promise you special attention if and when you have questions on Istanbul and any part of Turkey (as the former DE for Turkey) and a humorous trip report of our trip to the spa in Thailand both on TA and Fodor's.

Would prefer to go through this torture sometime in January 2011.

The place I immediately think of is the Chiva Som in Hua Hin. It's a lovely spa. They have a program for weight loss, but their overall emphasis is on overall health. They offer massage, steam, hydrotherapies. They have beautiful, tasty, healthy food. There are just two probalem I can think of:

1. the price may not fit your budget
2. In no way will you feel like any of this is torture.

enjoy!

Thank you kathie.

i checked the site. Their resorts look good and i think they would fit the pampering needs.

However, they use holistic, detox, etc. concepts that are anethema to me.

One good thing i learned is that if we want a five star resort we have to increase our budget, and i guess that we will.

However, for that price , we can go to the excellent resort at Hiltonhead, SC or to the Duke weight loss program in NC, both of which provide full MD supervision and thorough medical check-ups, rather than the psychosomatic holistic approach which uses placebos. The environment may not be exotic, but it would be more target oriented.

If you're at all interested in Mexico, my friend has been to this spa/resort and raves about it. She has excellent taste.

I have friends who swear by Chiva Som. They go every year for a month. (Case in point for the quote, the rich are different from you and me!)

There are quite a few wellness resorts in Bali and just about every resort in Bali offers some kind of feel better program that combines healthy eating with spa treatments and exercise of some sort. The Balinese are always flexible and accommodating. You can tailor the programs to fit your tastes and needs.

I would suggest Como Shambhala. The cost is about the same as Chiva Som and the setting, while not on a beach, is splendid and the food is very good. Your program can be as "new age" as as you choose; lots of options in food choices and fitness regimes. Excellent spa.

I’d also recommend the Chedi Club at Tanah Ganjah. Less structured, but lots of pampering and choices in physical activities. Beautiful grounds, good food, excellent service and access to nearby cultural attractions.

Yikes--I cannot believe those prices for Chiva Som; maybe I need new glasses.

I think you could do just as well price wise at Canyon Ranch in Tucson, Arizona, and you would have good weather!
