Wedding in Bali
My son and girlfriend would like to get married in Bali. Does anyone know the legalities of this and who to contact. They are both U.S. citizens. Thanks

The US has a counsulate office in Bali. They are a bit busy at the moment.
Perhaps they could celebrate at a local disco...
Did not they read the US State Dept warnings???
Are their heads up their rears?

To answer your question, under the British common law as adopted in the US and elsewhere where British common law was the basis for the current law, "a marriage, legally done at the place it is done, is recognized everywhere" Divorce is another matter however.

Jean,

I hope you were not offended by the insensitive post above.

Obviously, the situation has changed quite a bit in Bali since you posted your question on October 8th. The U.S. government has recommended all U.S. citizens postpone travel to Indonesia.

If your son and his girlfriend would still like a beach wedding in an exotic location, Thailand, the Maldives, and Tahiti all have regular packages set up including the wedding and honeymoon stay, and the resort will help with the licenses, legalities, etc.

Hopefully, someone with more details will post; if not, I'd recommend you go to www.google.com and type in "thailand wedding license" or "thailand wedding package" - I just did and got this site, which lists the U.S. government's requirements for weddings of U.S. citizens in Thailand:

http://www.northernthailand.com/romancing/USA.html

Good luck, and congratulations to your son!

The Evason Spa resort at Pranburi south from Hua Hin looked fabulous, we could not afford to stay but we saw the pool villas and it looked simply amazing, also very quiet.

KYJ is certainly no recommendation for University of California, Davis. If that person could read, they would see that my post was five days before the bombing in Bali. Some people should not be allowed to post. How rude!!
But to others, many thanks for info. I think that the Balinese need all the tourism they can get - the gentle people must be devastated by the lack of people.
