Weather in Japan

Hello! We are planning to travel to Japan but we have not made up our minds when to go. Is it better to go in September when it might be warmer but there is more chance of a rain or at the beginning of October when it might be cooler but less rainy. We are planning to do the usual stuff: Tokyo, Kyoto etc. Also, we are not aware of any festivals taking place during this period in the main holiday destination but if anyone has any info please let us know. Your advice would be appreciated. Many thanks!

Well, September would still be baseball season. Also in September there is a grand sumo tournament in Tokyo.

Ok, so does that mean that it will be difficult to find hotels etc? I doubt. But what I would like to find out is whether there are any festivals going on in Japan during the 2nd half of Sept and first half of Oct. The guidebooks including FODORS does not say anything but I think someone on this website might have mentioned something.

Finally, I would still love to know about the weather. Ta.

Famous festivals in Kyoto and Osaka area in September, October are;
1) Jidai Matsuri, in downtown Kyoto on October 22: parade of those in old costume during the time Kyoto used to be the capital (AD 794 to 1867).
2) Danjiri Matsuri, in Kishiwada (south of Osaka, take Nankai Honsen line from Namba) on September 15.
This site is though in Japanese, photos should be impressive;

Weather wise, the middle of September has a lot of rainy days, but this year Japan is having a cold summer, so this should be shifted.

Thanks for all the replies. I have another question: how about typhoons? To what extent can they affect your travel in Japan? I read that September is the typhoon season and in the past there were some serious destructions as a result. Comments on this would be appreciated.
