Weather in China in mid- Oct
 

We will be going to China for two weeks mid-late October--what is the weather like--i've looked up the general temperatures ranging from 55 in Beijing to 65 in Xian--but would you take spring or fall clothes??(my husband just said to ask your wife--why does he think mostly women ask these questions--i dont think he even knows there is a change of seasons:)

Bring fall clothes as the season is heading into winter. Layer as much as possible. October, esp in Beijing can go from cool to warm in the space of a day or two. Think of it as New York city in October, you can have Indian summer or cold weather. Xian will be fairly consistent with cooler temps. You also have a good chance of rain in Xian in October.

What's the difference between spring and fall clothes? I live in southern California where it's summer clothes most of the year ;)

I would bring some lightweight sweaters/knits and a light to medium weight jacket, coat, or raincoat. Nothing too heavy but something to layer with in case of cooler temperatures and to transition from indoor to outdoor.

Remember, whatever you do not pack and find that you need can probably be purchased pretty inexpensively. A year ago we were there in October and found the weather quite comfortable and did not need heavy clothes--except in Tibet. Also, China is not a place where you need anything fancy or really dressy so you can pack light. Jane, much has been said about wearing jeans in China and for travellers especially it sounds quite acceptable? What about for seniors?

Jeans are perfectly OK to wear in China. I'm not sure why it would be any different for seniors (perhaps I didn't understand the question correctly). If you're going out to a nicer restaurant, you might want to go a little dressier. By dressier I mean dress slacks, not sequined gowns :)

Being a senior myself, I don't hesitate to wear jeans where ever and when ever anyone else would. In fact, once cold weather comes, that is my standard attire. O course, cold weathere in So. CA is not really cold. Anyway, don't worry about jeans. Have fun.
