Warning! Border Guards Confiscating China Guidebooks
Fodorís Guidebooks are being confiscated by Chinese border officials, especially around the Vietnamese border. It seems that they donít approve of certain maps that do not include Taiwan as part of China. If you are crossing into China by land, consider putting a fake cover on your guide book to make it less recognizable. You may even want to tear out the map pages in question. The Fodorís maps with Taiwan are on inside front cover and pages 8 and 9 (the map on page 307 might pass muster). In case your book is confiscated, copy down key information and phone numbers ahead of time. Good luck!

Next edition please show Tibet as an occupied foreign territory.

Might as well include Mongolia as part of China too, I am sure the Chinese would love that!

According to all web forums, this is ONLY at surface border crossings along the Vietnam borders. This does not apply to 99.5% of visitors who fly in or land by boat.

Yes, that's true. There have only been reports of confiscated books at the Vietnam border. They've taken Fodor's and Lonely Planet. I haven't heard of other books being confiscated, but almost all of them have some sort of map that doesn't show Taiwan as part of China. Just a heads up if you're heading that way.
