Volunteer work in Thailand
wondering if anyone can help with some suggestions as my web searches have been for naught. My 17 year old wants to remain in Thailand after her teaching stint in a village outside of Chiang Mai ends in April. She'd like to work in a refugee camp (not too close to the Myanmar border where there are "problems") or in some other volunteer (she'll pay her way for room & board) capacity with adolescent girls, women, community centers. If you suggest tsunamo relief areas, please tell me what known NGOs are there as I want her to be with an org. that is "established" and non-prosyletizing, thank you Jan

Have her try Dr. Cynthia's clinic which is near mae Sot. They do terrific work and I know they take volunteers. There are also many NGOs in Chiang Mai that work with Burmese refugees. There's also an orphanage in Chiang Mai -- starts with a V (I'll find the name).

there are visa issues which you should investigate early on as well...
|
visa is not an issue; she has an extended one and it can be renewed...just trying to find some opportunities before worrying about the logistics. thanks

You might want to look at last Sunday's New York Times Travel section (2/20/05). There are a few websites that might prove helpful.

Here's some information on Dr. Cynthia's clinic. This is a superb organization.

Orphanage is Vieng Ping and here's the link to Dr. Cynthia's clinic I forgot in previous post.

Do ensure that your daughter does it all 'by the book', not sure I can figure out what visa status she has managed to get, but wise to make sure it is all done correct and insist even from large NGO's that they can provide the correct permit ( that she needs ) even for Voluntary work.

she has gotten a 3 month visa to volunteer in a village outsode of CM. Sheis with an outfort that has been aroiund for decades called Global Routes out of Northhampton, MA. Thanks for the time and thought, fodorites,if you think of anything else, please let me know. I just emailed her to telljer to go into Chiang Mai and find out about extending her visa as well as what else she mightneed to stay in country longer. thanks for the suggestions. Jan

btw; found out that anytime one flies out of Thailand and re-enters that one is automatically given a 30 day visa.
