Visa for Burma/Myanmar from US Embassy in DC?

Has anyone recently applied for their Visa by sending their passports to the Myanmar Embassy in DC?

I'm about to do this and I'm wondering if I can send my and my husband's passports together in a single fed-ex envelope, with one money order for the fees for both, and one return prepaid Fed-ex envelope.

Any other tips for getting the visas this way? I'd really prefer to do this over using a visa service as the cost saving is substantial (at least $200 for the two passports).

Thanks!

Hey Kristina, when are you going?

Kathie Apr 29th, 2014 12:11 PM

Yes, I've gotten visas from the embassy twice. I also mailed both of our passports in one envelope and had them returned in one envelope. No glitches, fast, easy and cheap!

I did that just last month. Worked smoothly and I get them back in about 10 days.

For those of you who sent the application to the embassy, what exactly did you use as a copy of your air ticket/itinerary?

My international ticket is into Cambodia and out of Yangon. I don't have my ticket into Yangon yet. Do I need to buy that before sending away for the visa?

Also, if you sent multiple passports together with a single money order, did you include a note stating this?

Ugh. One more question...

The visa app says the visa photos must have been taken in the last 6 months. I have some passport photos I was going to use to send it tomorrow, but they are the same as the ones IN our passport (which is now 7 years old).

Think they'll notice? ;-)

Can anyone answer the questions in the post above?

Hi Kristina

I applied through the Myanmar embassy in Canberra - yes I know, not the same as DC but presume they follow the same guidelines.

For the first trip I gave full copies of all requested info on their form, used the same envelope for me and DH, same money order, no note.
For my second and most recent trip I attached a hand written note advising just arrival and departure dates. Had my passport back in 10 days.

I don't think they'll notice the photo issue, but wouldn't like to risk that they do for the sake of a few bucks.

I used photos that were about 6-7 years old, but not the same ones as in my passport. Not a problem. We took our documents to the Embassy/Consular so if it was an issue it wouldn't have consumed time sending it back to us and then returning it.

Ok, sent everything off today, with new photos. Fingers crossed that it all comes back ok.

Passports with visas arrived back yesterday. Ten days door to door, not bad!

Great!

Just heard from my travel agent that you can now apply for a E-VISA. Want to know if anyone else knows about this?

Click on your own link - the website is in Beta... as it has been for a year or two. The website was set us several years ago and has never been fully functional. You can get a pre-approved visa from your travel agent in Myanmar. It is frankly easier and cheaper to get one from the embassy in Washington, DC.

PS Zambesi has a recent post here on getting a visa from the embassy - very fast and efficient.

I wanted to follow up on this thread. I went to the embassy in DC last Thursday with my paperwork. My visa and passport arrived today (Wednesday), and that's with a holiday thrown into the equation. I fully expected to wait longer, especially since there appeared to be piles and piles of passports awaiting processing, so they've exceeded my expectations.

used the on-line e-visa and had it completed in around 4 days!

Yes, at last the long promised online visa is available! But at three times the $20 cost of a visa from the embassy.
