Vietnam Visa...who to make the money order or certified check out to
 

Heading to Vietnam from the US in February, '07. I've got the visa application form filled out, photo & passport ready to go to the San Fran Consulate. BUT, who do I make the money order or certified check out to for the visa fee? Might they even take a personal check? Thanks for replies.

VISA fee in the form of MONEY ORDER, or CASHIER’S CHECK, or CERTIFIED CHECK payable to “THE EMBASSY OF VIETNAM.” Applicants applying together may submit the fee in one money order.

If you go to the consulate in person you can use cash.

Whatever you do don't do what I did. A week ago today I took all of my stuff for our visas to the local post office to mail to the Washington D.C. embassy. I had carefully written down all the instructions from the embassy on how to send the passports and money order to them. The clerk at the ppost office & I discussed all the different options. She said I would be fine and overly careful if I sent this certified mail with a written delivery confirmation requested both ways, meaning that someone actually has to sign to indicate the parcel was delivered.

So, I did it that way. It's been a week now and the package still hasn't been delivered or signed for. When I check on the tracking number it just says that it left St. Paul last Sunday and is enroute. How can it take this long for something to go from St. Paul to D.C? Because I didn't pay the $14 each way for express which provides tracking every step of the way, I'm a nervous wreck that the US mail has lost our passports. Yesterday I sent the postal service an e-mail asking about this, but of course they say they have 1 to 2 business days to reply. Pay the money so you can track this every step of the way. We leave a month from today and if these are lost in the mail I don't know what I will do.

Seems stange! We sent ours from NYC (actually Newark, NJ) overnight from post office with the required stuff and a paid return filled-out paste-on slip. It took about a week longer than we expected but got our passports and visa back. I doubt that the PO lost your mailing. I just wonder if the written confirmation has not held things up. With regular mail it could take a week for St. Paul to DC with Thanksgiving and weekends. I bet you will have good news Tuesday or Wednesday.

Wow, we also sent ours to DC from Minnesota November 17 by Priority Mail with delivery conformation. They were delivered on November 20.

For the return we had enclosed an Express mailer so that we could track the return. With the Thanksgiving holiday I figured I would wait until the Monday after to check the return, but they were delivered to us that day, November 27.

I'm also sure that the Postal Service has not lost yours (for long).

Thanks Elainee and Tatersalad for the feedback on how long yours took. Now I don't know if I am more reassured or more nervous. But, I just realized there is nothing I can do today. The embassy only operates on regular business hours so no one would have been there today on a Sat. to accept any mail. So, first news I could possibly have would be on Monday night. The USPS website says updates on tracking usually occur in the evening after day time deliveries.

julies - I too sent mine from St. Paul to the D.C. embassy. It was sent via Priority Mail ($4 or so) on 14 November and I had it sent back via Priority Mail and received it 29 November. I didn't feel the Express option was necessary (and didn't want to pay the extra), but I did add on the delivery confirmation for my own piece of mind. I don't trust the tracking things because the website it directs you too never seems to get updated until the package has actually arrived. I know that's not how it's supposed to work, but it just seems to be how my experiences have been in the past.
