We also stayed at the Elegance Hotel. At that time, the chain referred to their hotels by number and we stayed at the Elegance 4 on a lovely street in the heart of the Old Quarters. On our last night in Hanoi, we moved to the Elegance 3 which had even better rooms (larger). The Elegance 5, which I believe is the Diamond Hotel, was just being completed and I believe that it is the one located very close to the lake. I can assure you that you will not regret staying in any one of these hotels. The service was equal to or better than a 5 star hotel. The staff was amazing at both the 4 & 3 and it was the most memorable hotel we have ever stayed at.
Be sure to spend a day touring around Hue. The ancient tombs and the Pagoda were among the highlights of our 3 week trip.
I put together a rather extensive set of notes after about 9 months of research and we used those rather than a book (much lighter). If you would like me to email you my notes, I would be happy to do so. You can also check out my trip report by clicking on my name.

In Sapa, the Bac Ha market is not to be missed. It is held every Sunday and locals from all over travel to get there. If possible, arrange to be in Sapa over the weekend and return to Hanoi on Sunday evening. The train station is between Sapa and the Bac Ha market, so it is most convenient if you see the market and get dropped off at the train station, rather than returning to Sapa. If possible, try getting a two person berth so you can sleep on the train. There are very few available, so you will have to make arrangements well in advance. Sapa was a definite highlight and if I had to chose between Halong Bay and Sapa, I would say Sapa would be my first choice.
