Last year my husband and I traveled to China, Cambodia and Vietnam. I always arrange and research our trips, but Vietnam was almost too much to try and arrange - the country is so large, there is little to no train service, and several flights are necessary to see all the parts I wanted to visit. This was the only time in traveling more than 20 years internationally that we used a travel company and couldn't have been happier. We used Tonkin Travel, we had our own private 2 week tour, at a fraction of the cost that I would have thought. We had English speaking guides throughout the trip. I have posted reviews on Trip Advisor, and you can also look up this company - they are first rate all the way.

Forgot to add we were there in November/December - weather was OK (as far as SE Asia!) - we had little rain - but again Vietnam can differ greatly between North and South weather wise (think Northern Ca and Southern Ca_

Re "there is little to no train service" that is just not the case. There is an extensive rail system running from Saigon in the south to Sapa in the north. We have used it many times and found it to be an excellent way of travelling around the country. See

It rained 2 of the 3 days I was just in Hoi An, on Feb. 26 & 27. Next day we drove to Hue and it rained all day there too Feb. 28. Temps were very cool, only 65-70F or so. I ended up buying a cheap plastic raincoat for 75 cents and walked in the rain. Just pack water resistant shoes like keener and you will be fine.

And not only in VN, you can also travel to and from China by train. I arrived in Hanoi on a train from Nanning and traveled to Hoi An most of the way by train. They may not be posh, even the ones they call upscale, but make for an adventure.

Ditto MmePerdu, except I went on to Saigon. (Had started that trip in Scotland, all the way to Saigon by train!) Also went to Sapa and back by train, but that pretty uncomfortable - may be better now.
