Vietnam Dong

I will be entering Vietnam on a boat (Mekong Delta Cruise). Won't get to a major city until 6 days into the cruise. Trying to figure out the best (easiest and least expensive) way to get Dong. Should I start with cash or Debit card?

even small cities and towns have ATMs. The dong is not an exchangeable currency so spend it before you leave the country.

All towns, even small ones in the delta, will have ATMs so You should not have a problem. Notify your bank of your dates and places you will be visiting as some will block foreign usage. Major cities like Can Tho, HCMC etc will have exchange booth where you can exchange $,€ & £ at v competive rates.

Most ATMs will levy a fee for each withdrawal 40k to 140k and limit withdrawals often to 2m Dong although HSBC, Citibank and ANZ have limits as high as 10m. These limits and fees do change but that was the case in June.

Incidentally Kathie, the Dong can now be exchanged in many SEA countries at reasonable rates. Indonesian rupiah is the currency that seems to be less favoured these days. Struggled to find anywhere in Malaysia that would take it and a few places in Bangkok would but at appealing rates.

Also, try not t use standalone machines, only those attached to banks, preferably during opening hours.
