Any suggestions on a good stop-over point from the USA to Bali? Thanks!

What's your objective: the shortest travel time or an interesting place to stop off along the way?

If it's the former, then try to limit yourself to two flights. If you can swing business class the Singapore non-stop from Newark to Singapore is terrific.

The actual time in the air is about the same whether you go east to Europe or west to Asia. The key is to get a good connection and avoid airport time.

I agree with Marmot, it would be more helpful to understand what you want out of a stopover. From what I see, going via Seoul is the shortest route. Non-stop from JFK to Seoul, and then you would only have a layover of 1.5 hours to get to an onward flight to Bali. The drawback to me of that flight is that you arrive into Bali at 1 am, which is not the ideal time to arrive in a new country after a long flight, esp. if you choose to go to an inland hotel which may require a bit of a drive. But overall it is a good way to go if you want to get there fast and avoid long layovers.

Korea would not be my pick, however, as a place to spend a few days between flights. Esp. in the winter months when it will be quite cold and you will need winter clothing. I don’t think the city really offers much in the way of tourist sights, and also the airport is <i>quite</i> a trek to and from Seoul. If your objective is to have a pleasant stop for a few days to see a different country, then I would pick Singapore or Hong Kong. Both have easy access to airports and offer a lot to see and do (and more the Seoul). Esp. Hong Kong from late October through about early Feb when the weather is so nice. If your trip coincides with something like the Lunar New Year, Hong Kong or Singapore would be good choices for that. LNY is generally sometime between early Jan and mid-Feb, it varies from year to year.

Another option would be Tokyo, which again has cold weather and it’s also a trek to the airport, so several days here would be necessary to justify a layover there, IMO. It’s also fairly expensive. Shanghai would also work, however for a few day layover you need a visa (about US$100 per person), so bear that in mind. Shanghai also has a cold winter. It seems a bit of a shame to go all the way to the PRC and not see other places, esp Beijing. The contrast between Bali and Shanghai would be amazing, however.

Bangkok to me is not as attractive because there are no non-stop flights from NYC airports to Bangkok. It is a very interesting city, and if you have time it would be a nice place to visit, but is not a logical stop-over on a flight to Bali.
