Why go with a US agent? I plan my own trips but often use local agents for hotels (www.vietnamstay.com). When I do use an agent or buy a tour I prefer to have an agent that is based in the country where I'm going.

The truth is that many US agents subcontract to a local agent. Several agents that were recommended to us were

http://www.exotissimo.com/index.php?lang=en

and

http://www.trailsofindochina.com/

If you search through some of the earlier posts there were several that mentioned a good agent in California but I can't remember the name.

You're best off planning your trip yourself with resources such as this board. You'll pay a lot more to have an agent plan it, and you are less likely to get what you want. As mentioned, if you plan yourself, yyou can use local agents as needed to arrange transport or lodging.

I have to agree with welltraveledbrit and kathie! I'm planning our trip to VN and Cambodia at the end of Nov this year. What I do is use the local companies as mentioned like www.vietnamstay.com for local tours, airport pickup and transfers, hotel bookings, air bookings, etc. This way, we get to do what we want, when we want to. Then, use a travel agent for international and VN to Cambodia flights and visa processing.

Welltraveledbrit, would you know local tour companies for China? We're planning to go next year to Hong Kong, Lijiang and Yangshuo. Thanks so much!

Yup, I used vietnamstay for our trip to Vietnam in May. They came to the hotel to arrange payment, which was very straightforward. Their rates were much better than I found anywhere else. The company is owned by a very entrepernurial young Vietnamese guy.
