Urgent Advice on Yogyakarta restaurants

Hi. We're leaving on Monday to Java for 3 nights (The Gran Mercure Hotel), then to Seminyak (Bali) for 3 nights and another 3 nights in Ubud (Bali). I need your suggestions on restaurants in yogyakarta, please!!! so we can celebrate in a special way our wedding aniversary. Thanks very much. I really appreciate your time.

pprada, personally I think the choice of restaurants in Yogya and central Java in general is pretty dismal. The only restaurant that I would wholeheartedly recommend -- especially for a special occasion -- is the Amanjiwo at Borobudur. It's quite pricy though and the menu is not extensive.

Indonesian food and Chinese food is readily available and quite good, but the restaurant experience is definitely no frills.

We ate lunch at the Amman, it is beautiful and I would recommend it but at the time there were so few guests it had very little atmosphere. We ate at another place in Yogyakarta we enjoyed, I looked back over my trip report and found the details of the place, here were my thoughts at the time but restaurants change! "We had a very nice meal at a restaurant recommended by Indri, Gadjah Wong Garden Restaurant. It's a lovely place built with gardens along a hillside. There are several different dining areas with different live music for each area, gamalan, piano and a jazz trio downstairs.

The food is Javanese and International but very modern and quite decorative. Our meal was very enjoyable and ridiculously cheap. There were a couple of expats there and several Indonesian parties, charming and definately recommended".

Thank you very much. We're not staying for long, so with your options marmot and welltraveledbrit are perfect for the days, and for our aniversary.

I haven't had the time to check your trip report, but I'll do it later. Thanks again.

Hi there

Apparently there were few nice restaurants near Sheraton Hotel. I found this website really useful -> http://www.yogyes.com/

Also don't forget to attend the cultural performances at Prambanan Temple or Borobudur. Through the site you can find out the performances date and time.

I was travelling alone last week in Jogja and most of the time I ate at Malioboro mall at Malioboro street. My favorite was Soto Ayam (chicken broth noodle) and Bakso Ayam (Noodle and Chicken balls). Typical Indonesian food.

For good quality batik and arts all under one roof, go to Mi Rota at Malioboro street.

Hope this help. Enjoy Jogja and do it before it became as commercialised as Bali :))
