Upscale-ish hotel recommendation in Tokyo?
 

Can anyone recommend a great hotel in Tokyo that is not too expensive? My and my fiance'like modern/newer-looking hotels somewhere close to where the upscale areas of Tokyo. I guess we would like to spend no more than US$175 per night. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks,

Hilton Tokyo. You can get a room for 16,900 (about $145) with advance purchase. Or $160 without the advance purchase requirement. Those rates include taxes, as I learned from KimJapan.

Take a look at the Park Hotel Tokyo (not Park Hyatt). A nice design hotel and not terribly expensive (about $180).

Have you looked at Mansions at Roppongi? It is a fairly new building, with all the modern conveniences- computerized toilets and tubs, flat screen TVs, kitchens and washer/dryers. The space and feel of a modern apartment, but with maid service, good concierges, free internet hookups in the room or computers downstairs.

It is about a minute walk from the roppongi subway station, and this great neighborhood has lots of great places to eat and drink. Roppongi Hills mall is about two blocks away.

After staying at many hotels in Tokyo, this is our favorite now.

I second the Mansions at Roppongi. We had a fabulous stay there two years ago and would definitely stay there again when in Tokyo. As lcuy said, it's well located and the apartments are modern and comfortable. I felt like I was "home" within 10 minutes. It has every convenience in the apartments. Get the one bedroom if you can spend a little extra, it's so roomy with a seperate kitchen and a nice dining room. It's a lot of space by any standards and well worth the money.

FYI, The Mansions at Roppongi have closed, or, at the very least, are no longer under "The Mansions at..." brand. While there, they were excellent, but alas.

The Mansions at Azabu Towers is still open though. And if my stay at their Roppongi location was any indication, it should be amazing.

We stayed at Keio Plaza; modern hotel, very good location, big rooms for Janapese standars. We paid ~ 225 US$ / room/night in April 2005.

Ditto the Keio Plaza Hotel in Shinjuku. Wonderful location in a vibrant part of Shinjuku. Lots of restaurants in the neighborhood with all kinds of nightlife from the Kabuki cho district to panchinko parlors and lots of huge dept stores (7 to 10 stories) for all kinds of shopping. Very close to the train station which is one of Tokyo's main and largest stations with connections to almost everywhere. The hotel is one of the largest in the vacinity at over 40 floors which you can get a nice view of Mt. Fuji in the winter months on good view days. Website:

that really stinks about the Mansions, I loved that place. I just checked the website and it indicates it has closed but offers no other information. I've sent an email asking for info and hopefully will find out if it has been taken over by another hotel.

After doing a search on google, it appears that the Mansions at Roppongi are now the Oakwood Apartments Roppongi Central. After reading the overview and looking at the pictures, it looks to be the same place, new managemant.

the mansions at roponggi are excellent, i would not hesitate to recommend it. if it is indeed true that it closed down, please do try the mansions at azubu. though these are not regular hotels, the rooms are faboulous!

Upscale ryokan...plenty, all over Japan. If you really want upscale, then prepare to spend at least 20,000 yen per person per night for room, dinner and breakfast. Higher prices than that for truly upscale and special.

Mango, do you ever use Priceline? This might be the time to try, because there are reports on biddingfortravel.com of getting rooms at the Intercontinental Tokyo Bay on Priceline for $140 to $145 a night. I can't imagine getting a comparable room for anything close to that price if you were paying up front instead of bidding.

Take a look at biddingfortravel's Asia section; Tokyo Intercontinental is the only listed 5 star hotel for Tokyo, so if you stick to bidding for 5 star in Tokyo you can be pretty sure you'll get it. With 5 free rebids, if you start at $140 and go up from there, I bet you can get it for $175 or less. The hotel looks very good, great views and location.

Actually, according to the reviews on tripadvisor.com of the Intercontinental Tokyo Bay, you might be able to get a room there for less than $175 on the hotel website....

well, forget that. I plugged several different dates for may and their webiste is coming up about 24000 to 28000 for a king room. For me, Priceline would be the way to go on this hotel. For me, it would be a good bargain at up to $175 in bidding.

You're welcome, but I didn't really do it just for you. I'd already looked into that hotel for my upcoming trip. I've looked at so many hotels, I don't even remember them all. But this one stuck in my little mind as a very very good deal and very nice. And low risk on the bidding part if it is the only 5 star hotel on Priceline in all of Tokyo. I hope that info is right - it seems to be because there are no other reports of anyone getting a different 5 star hotel when they bid on 5 stars.
