Upgrading to business class on Northwest

I'm hoping to trade in some ff miles on Northwest for an upcoming trip to Thailand. Anyone done this and what's the best way to proceed? The trip is not until October.

Northwest will give you two options. You can upgrade from the lowest regular coach fare available or from a full coach fare. A full coach fare is much more expensive but requires fewer miles and provides more flexibility (including being fully refundable). I am not a big fan of NW but their recent upgrades to World Business Class have made a great improvement. Upgrades are not always avaialble so book early. If the upgrade is not available when you buy the ticket, wait, it often becomes available closer to flight time. Just keep calling.
