United Airline bankrupcy? Ok to buy tickets?

Hi, probably a dumb question but here we go.
We are planning a 2 week trip to Taiwan this upcoming new years from Michigan to visit friends. Thus far, the best deal we can get is with United Airline, which is not all that great at $1000. But a friend told me that UA might be in the process of bankrupcy this winter and I should be careful about flying with them. Any truth to such a rumor? Also assuming they do go bankrupted.. does it mean tickets you bought will be no good?
Thanks.

United has enough assets that even if they do declare bankruptcy, it will be an reorganization-type, not a going out of business type. Indeed, they are even reassuring their very frequent fliers that their frequent flier miles will be safe.

Nonetheless, if you can find a comparably priced ticket on another airline, you will avoid any worry you might have about United solvency.

I'll be more concerned about possibilities of their canceling non profitable routes.

US$1000 r/t to Taiwan seems high.

Yes it does seem high, for I was expected to pay at most $700-800. But so far I check all major web sites plus travel agents.. $1000 seems to be the cheapest out there.. unfortunately :( Unless anyone out there has other idea.

Travel Mondays thru Thursdays and avoiding Chinese holidays; Willing to travel on Asian (generic) airlines; Don't buy tickets too early but 2-3 months before departure; could get you to save on fares.

Check out <www.etn.nl> an online discounter.

Good luck

Having estensively researched airfares to SE Asia for an upcoming trip next year to Bali, I can tell you that you could do a lot worse than $1000. Recommendations by the above poster to wait until 2-3 months before or look at discount airfare sites might get you down to $800-$900.

As for United, I assume that you will connect through Chicago from Michigan which means that your biggest worry is that the flight from Michigan to Chicago will be either changed or eliminated. I agree with the above posters that the possibility of your ticket becoming worthless in the event of bankruptcy is quite low.
