Uh-oh, electrical outlet crisis
I just realized that the outlet I have that I thought would work in India is actually for South Africa. Will I be able to use the 2-pronged European adaptor? Or do I need to somehow find an Indian one before i leave. I thought I was all set, and here I am, once again in a last-minute panic. Help!
Amazon has the plug, but I'm not sure it will arrive by Wednesday. Ideas? |
Ok, I just found a place online that has overnight shipping.

The SA plug should work in India if it is three round pins. You won't be able to use a 2-prong adaptor. You need three round pins. Your hotels may be able to provide them as well. Also in hoels with the "shavers only" 2-pin outlets in bathrooms, in my experience you can use them for any 2-pin plug and can charge a cell phone, etc. I actually think you may be better off waiting until you get to India and buying one there. No need to panic.

I've only run into the three prong outlets once or twice- usually its the two round prongs; sometimes small, sometimes bigger. Even it there was a 3 prong outlet, usually there were a couple of the two prongs or the multi country plugs. Maybe its a regional thing?
either way, we lost ours once and had no problem buying a new one in India. |
me too... 3 thick prongs

Thanks, everyone. I did order one for overnight delivery, so I should have it by tomorrow. It cost more, but I just couldn't risk not being able to charge my camera batteries! :-)

Do you have a converter as well? Sorry to upset you, but you need a converter (they have 220 in India) plus a plug adapter. You can get these at a hardware store easily.

Came across this site awhile ago with pictures of plugs etc that I found very useful.

Most small devices (cameras, phones, computers) are dual voltage. They can handle any voltage as long as you can get them plugged in. Check where it says "input" on the back or your charger and if it says AC 100-240 V, you're fine.

Agree with lcuy, you almost certainly will NOT need a converter for your camera (or cell phone, or laptop)

Right, my cameras (the only things I'll be charging) both have dual voltage, so in my situation, I do need only the plug. Thanks.
