Typical Thai dishes we should try on upcoming trip
I am familiar with Pad Thai and little more although I have had some additional dishes but cannot remember the names.
please let me know what some of your favorite dishes are while in the Bangkok area, and where to get them. Thanks. |
I'll look forward to the responses as we leave for BKK in a couple weeks. To better familiarize myself with Thai food I downloaded an app to my iPad, Thai Food & Recipes by Quantis, Inc. Its been fun to read & learn about a variety of dishes and see pictures.

I love Thai curries - green chicken curry, Penang curry, red curry with duck - there aer many variations to try. A favorite dish at a long favorite restaurant - try the eggplant in yellow bean sauce with pork at Lemongrass (close to Emporium) There have been rumors that Chote Chitr has re-opened. If so, they have many amazing dishes. Their mee krob is a revelation - complex rather than just sweet. Do try some of the wonderful salads - green papaya is a favorite, and banana flower is excellent. Just be open to trying many new dishes. You'll find your own favorites.

Thanks, kathie! I was hoping to enjoy some street food, too,but have been warned against that by many of you here. I also have a restaurant list somewhere in my emails I was sent by our Fodor's friend.. and will dig it out. Looking forward to it all.

Speaking of "Apps", try the Thai Talking Food Menu "Lite". If you like it, and want more, you can pick up the full version for $1.99.
Are we into spicy? Soups? Noodles? I like gaengsom cha oam, a spicy, tamarind based soup, with omelet. Tom kha gai is a coconut milk base soup with chicken. One of my favorite Thai dishes, rarely found in the west, is khao mun gai, Thai chicken with rice. You get rice, cooked with chicken broth, with some chicken topping it. There will be an accompanying, spicy sauce that is spooned onto the chicken and rice. It often comes with a bowl of soup as a side. Two of my favorite shops are Kaiton Khao Mun Kai, at soi 30, Petchaburi Road, and Pantip Khao Mun Kai at the bus stop, across the footbridge, from Pantip Plaza. Here's a Google map with some ideas: http://g.co/maps/h9usp |

i love pad se yu, a noodle dish chicken and cashew while not strictly thai is good.. anything yellow curry is a fav: shrimp, crab, chicken |
Thanks, friends!

One of the wonderful things about Thai food is that there is so much variety and so many different types of food. That said, there are some dishes that I absolutely love in Bangkook that others might not like as much.
Lemongrass restaurant near the Emporium is one of my favorites for a quiet relaxing dinner, as Kathie mentioned. I also love the cafe in the Emporium itself, which is on the third or 4th floor facing Sukhumvit road...excellent food and very clean and they have a smaller more cozy cafe branch in the Emporium food court, that is right off the housewares section ...just look to your left, (can't remember the name...I just follow my stomach) In general , almost all the nice malls (especially Central Chitlom and Emporium) have fantastic food courts and small cafes that have wonderful selections and comfortable atmosphere. For street food in small local shops, try any of the booths around soi Thonglor (50) ...they have the best sticky mango, duck noodles and the ultimate comfort food, long-braised pork leg which is served over rice and with some green veg and has a texture like soft butter but taste is heavenly, a slight five-spice flavor. As you will no doubt spend some tiime at Chatuchak Market, do pick up some Mieng Kam, which is dried shrimp, toasted coconut, a slice of lime, and palm sugar wrapped in a betel nut leaf. You will find them served 5 to a bamboo skewer and many people make them fresh...right in front of section 2, the garden section. The flavor explodes in your mouth. |
can't wait.
