typhoid vaccination for northern Vietnam?

We are traveling to Hanoi and Sapa in March. It was suggested we have a typhoid vaccination and Hep A vaccination. For those of you that have traveled there, have you gotten these vaccinations?

We're traveling there (and Cambodia and Hong Kong) next month. We took typhoid pills (4 pills total per person, taken over a 7-day period) and got combo Hep A and Hep B vaccination -- the latter wasn't strictly necessary, but we saw no reason not to do it, since after the 3rd shot, we'll be protected for life.

Hep A is a very good idea no matter where you travel because that is the hepatitis you can get from eating or drinking anything that has been contaminated by an infected food handler. It sounds gross, but hepatitis A is transmitted via fecal-oral contamination.

Hep B is also very good. It's harder to contract than hep A, but is more difficult to treat and recover from.

Typhoid is another food borne illness. Even with the Typhoid pills, still take food precautions because no vaccination is 100%.

qw, The cdc does indeed, recommend typhoid vaccine for travel to VN.

Here is the exact quote from the website under destinations: Vietnam and under Typhoid:

"Recommended for all unvaccinated people traveling to or working in Southeast Asia, especially if staying with friends or relatives or visiting smaller cities, villages, or rural areas where exposure might occur through food or water."

Typhoid is a food and water borne illness and there is antibiotic-resistant typhoid in SE Asia.

There have been some localized hepatitis A outbreaks even in the US over the past few years. It's all in the food handling. It's an easy vaccine to tolerate and hep A isn't just an overseas risk.

You are right Jaya. I always say it's wise to have the Hep A vaccine even if you are just staying at home.
