Two weeks in Northwest Malaysia
 

Hi All, I have two weeks to spend in and around Penang by myself. I can't handle too much direct sun exposure, so not too much water sports/beach etc.. So would you suggest 2 ~ 3 locations, e.g. should I go to Langkawi or Pulau Pangkor or Cameron Highlands? Would I be bored in Penang the whole two weeks? I wouldn't mind a slower pace. Are there eco retreats or programs that one can join in that region? Thank you!

Georgetown, Penang is my favorite part of this area. Lots to see and do. The beach parts of Penang are not attractive, if you want beach go to Langkawi. But the only things to do/see in Langkawi are beach areas.

I spent more than 2 weeks in Penang, also on my own, and wasn't bored for a moment. Also not a beach person, in addition, I went to the Cameron Highlands in the middle of my stay by taxi, and enjoyed my time there too. I can wholeheartedly recommend both.

I should have said specifically, "2 weeks in Georgetown". If you want to see the rest of the island there's a local bus service that does a whole circuit, or was. Do check if it interests you but I wouldn't imagine the service would go away. I'm sorry I didn't do it. But that will tell you how intriguing wandering around Georgetown can be. I should plan another trip.

I think most people would be bored in Penang for two weeks. We returned there for a week there early this year and were saddened to see the decline in the place since our previous visit two years previously. The food scene is very good with some excellent restaurant. The graffiti trail is pretty good, although a bit faded now.. Cheong Fatt Tze mansions, Ke Lok Se Temple and the Clan Jetties are all worth seeing but I would suggest spending no more than three of four days there.

The Cameron Highlands make a nice contrast but avoid at the weekends and public holidays when it gets horrendously busy. On the way, Ipoh is worth a couple of days. Again, great food, another graffiti trail and some fascinating Cave temples.

Langkawi is great for beaches and can be reached by ferry from Penang. There are also a few sights worth seeing - Dayang Bunting a small island off Langkawi is home to some nice karst scenery and the Lake of te Pregnant Maiden, some Mangrove Tours, and the Mrine Park is nice if you are into snorkelling etc.

I agree with crellston - far too long. If you stop in Ipoh I suggest a side trip to Kuala Kangsar.
