Two weeks in India in November
 

Looking for an itinerary. We have two weeks possibily two and a half and have never been to India. Any suggestions?

India is a vast country, both geographically and culturally, and can offer basically every experience you might find traveling elsewhere (and then some). In November the weather is excellent virtually everywhere, so your choices are huge.

So, please give us an idea of your interests. Do you like/dislike or need/not need: city, beach, mountains, museums, shopping, yoga/spa/ayurvedic, religious sights/pilgrimages, sporting events, outdoor pursuits? Do you like walks/hiking such that you would consider a walking holiday? Do you ride so that a horseback holiday may appeal? Do you feel you <i>must</i> go to the Taj Mahal, or are you open to the idea of going to India without seeing it? Have to been elsewhere in Asia before? Based on your research so far, what areas interest you? Do you feel you need a guided tour or are you doing this on your own? What are your goals for the trip? You will get much more focused recommendations if they are tailored to your interests.

With two to two & a half weeks, a sort of standard first tour would be Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra (the golden triangle)and one other city, maybe Varanasi or Udaipur. It is quite easy to arrange this on your own.

As Cicerone said though, it's hard to make suggestions not knowing what kind of travelers you are, and what kind of budget you have.

Two weeks or a little more could be utilized to visit some of the highpoints like the routine Golden Traingle of Delhi, Agra, Jaipur & parts of Rajasthan, as also some relaxation at the end of the tour. Cramming too much in a short period of time should be avoided for in that case you you have had neither any relaxation nor do you remember most of what you have seen!
Travellers from the US like to visit Varanasi, which could be added to your tour itinerary. However, the plan would primarily depend upon your own interests. It is always better to do a bit of research, yourself.
For a truly remarkable itinerary, a good balance of both sightseeing & hotel accomodation is imperative, never the less, there are some hotels which in themselves enhance the pleasures of a visit.
India has some fine wildlife to see. Ranthambhore located in the dry deciduos zone, is quite easily accessible. There are a few good hotels which are rustic, yet have all modern comforts to offer. These situate in areas closer to wilderness, so if one is lucky, one does get to hear animal calls during night.
Some Shaivite temples have beautiful images of Indian gods & goddesses. A few of these also have secular images, extremely well executed, but esoteric & a good guide will bring these to life.

While you may be able to do this on your own, I believe that you will get so much more from your visit by working and planning with a travel/tour company in India. There are many mentioned by others in this Forum.
My wife and i used VP Singh (LegendsndPalaces.com) in 2006 and highly recommend him. In 2 1/2 weeks we saw much more than Delhi, Jaipur, etc. and had a wonderful and exciting time with VP as our Guide.

lcuy's suggestion is perfect... hire a delhi agent likw castle and king to help you... that is who i use... you can do all of rajastan by car from delhi---make sure to pay extra for an SUV...

Don't follow the itinerary set forth by lyraholidays. 13 or so cities in 17 days is ridiculous. Is it doable? Sure. Will you enjoy it? No.

It's too much crammed into too little time in my opinion.
