To azzure:
On our recent trip to Japan we used a Tokyo travel guide by MobileReference http://www.mobilereference.com/.
I am not sure if they have one for Kyoto...
It has information about all major sites, lots of hotel and restaurant suggestions, maps, and itineraries, and, I think, it's layed out very well and easy to use. So, if you use a Pocket PC or some other mobile device, I would highly recommend it.

azzure - sorry for the late response! I have been dormant on this forum lately and have not logged on for a couple of months! Did you go on your trip already? Re: the guide books, I borrowed the Lonely Planet and Fodor’s from the local library. I preferred the Fodor’s to the Lonely Planet (perhaps because it was more colorful and had more pics than the edition of the Lonely Planet that I had!) I combined the info in there with the info on this travel board from everybody’s trip reports.

Not sure if you are looking for this, but…On my trips, I usually also like to read non-travel books related to the country that I am visiting. So on my Japan trip, I read: Japanland A Year in the Search of Wa by Karin Mueller and Learning to Bow: Inside the heart of Japan by Bruce Feiler. Both great books that I enjoyed.

If you’ve already visited, hope you had a great time! If not, safe travels!

Manisha -- Thank you so much for posting such a detailed trip report! I'm planning my own visit to Tokyo & Kyoto, and your report gives me a realistic idea of how much I can fit into a day. Thanks!

Manisha,
Thank you for the detailed trip report, and thanks to the person who brought this back up to the top. (Don't know why I missed this, as my husband and I will be traveling your route in Mid May.) May be seeking some additional advice in the near future!
