Traveling from NYC to Japan with a baby - should we do it?
My husband and I have a five and a half month daughter who is an amazing sleeper...11-13 hours a night. We are thinking about going to japan next week since we have the time now, but I'm worried that well ruin our very happy healthy sleeper. Also, if she's going to be up all night there, it might not be worth us taking this amazing vacation. She is currently only breastfed, but we may introduce early solids before we go. We would leave NYC on the 15th and return on the 3rd. Can't decide if we should bite the bullet and go or settle for someplace closer.
Would love any thoughts/opinions if you've traveled with a young baby! THANK YOU!

I have 3 kids -- and traveled overseas with them since they were very small. Last summer we flew from Maui and it took our kids 3 days to get over the jetlag on the way back (they couldn't fall sleep until 3 am) Mine are a bit older (AGES 6-8-10)so it is a little easier now. When they were babies it was much harder and exhausting easily taking 5 days to a week for them to make the sleeping adjustment.
Of course all babies are different . . . but that has been my experience - for what it's worth.

I don't regret the trips I took when the kids were little. No it wasn't easy, I was definitely more tired -- but it filled my thirst for adventure, and that superceded the need for comfort.
On a positive note -- I spoke with my sister in law who lived in Japan for 4 years and traveled back and forth to NYC area with her 3 very young children once a year. She thought her 6 month old baby was the easiest to deal with because she was already used to napping throughout the day.

We took a trip to Japan when my daughter was about 11 months old (and I was 5 months pregnant) and didn't have any problems. The stairs in some of the train stations were a challenge with the stroller and bags, so I suggest you travel as light as possible. Get the lightest and most compact stroller you can find. However, on recent trips I notice some Tokyo stations now have elevators to accomodate wheelchairs. In regards to jetlag, our daughter woke up at 2 am the first night, 5 am after the second night, and by the third day she was on a regular schedule with the rest of us.
We've traveled between Hawaii and Miami several times with our kids under a year old, and found they were easier to travel with than when they became toddlers.

Right now she's a potted plant so get a Bjorn type carrier and a Combi or similar stroller (they're really light) and do it. Just realize that Tokyo is really crowded, Osaka can be, but the other places you may want to go (KYOTO KYOTO KYOTO) are easier to maneuver around.
