Traveling alone to Japan

Hello. I was planning to travel alone to Japan next month. Does anyone have any guidance or thoughts on the safety of a woman traveling alone to Japan?
Thank you for any advice you can give.

Japan is very safe. There are not many cities in the world that you can walk down the street at any hour, and not feel frightened.....[speaking of Tokyo and Yokohama.]

Will be interesting to see other posts on this subject.

I always travel to Japan alone. I am male, but still think it is absolutely safe for everyone in the major cities (Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Kobe).

Yes, Japan is relatively safe compared to other major cities in the world. But I still recommend you to observe general guidelines for safety. Japan does have fair share of criminals. Be prudent until you can "sense" the danger on streets in Japan.

Happy New Year !

I've been travelling alone to Japan on a regular basis for more than 20 years, and I never felt unsafe, even at night in Tokyo, Osaka, etc.

Compared to most European cities , Tokyo is a heaven of safety for a single woman (and I've lived most of my life in Geneva, a very safe place).

If you read the Japanese press, you'll quickly realise that the amount of crime is negligible for a population of 130 mios people (see www.japantimes.co.jp for example). Furthermore, there is hardly any kind of crime that concerns foreign tourists that I'm aware of.

The only things I can think of being wary of are gropers on some lines of Tokyo subways at rush hour (but who would be on a crowded subway at 8 am during their vacations ?) and pickpockets in large crowds during festivals (matsuri), although I've never heard of a tourist being a victim of the latter.
