Travel HCMC to Hanoi

Finishing up plans for a trip to Vietnam and Thailand and made an incorrect assumption about travel between. Looks like train is about 33+ hours and most flights have a long lay-over in Kuala Lampur.. Thinking about looking for a very long lay-over and including an overnight in Kuala Lampur but would like to know if I have missed an option. Other ideas would be appreciated and as well for the flight option thoughts about using Expedia or such vs. a travel agent in HCMC. If travel agent use is suggested, I would appreciate info on an agent who you have been pleased with. Thanks for your help.

where are you coming from?

are you looking at air asia? if, so book directly on their site.. btw both airports are almost an hour by taxi from central K/L.

expedia gives you good ideas but it is not comprehensive... try kayak for one...

I'm confused - are you talking about travel between Hanoi and HCMC? If so, why not fly Vietnam Air instead of AirAsia and avoid the Kuala Lumpur layover?

Vietnam air will be the quickest and most convenient ( and most expensive) if you just want to see the two cities then fine. If you want to see more of the country then use the train and stop off at a couple of places along the way. We used a number of Vietnam Airways offices to book tickets when we were there and they seemed to have the best prices when compared with travel agents. If you are fixed on dates or are travelling anywhere near Tet ( Vietnamese new year) then book well in advance. As bob suggests Kayak is good and you can set up alerts for price changes/ alerts sky scanner is another option.

Vietnam Airlines, an up-and-coming international carrier, and JetStar, an offshoot of Qantas, compete energetically with multiple Hanoi-HCMC nonstop flights. A quick check shows prices around $75 US two months from now. Easy on-line booking direct from the airline sites too.
