TransSiberian - Need Your Help

Hi, Fodorites! we are in the planning stages for a trip for 2004 and are seriously considering doing the Trans-Siberian RR, either way, Moscow-Peking or Peking-Moscow.

Have you taken the TransSiberian? Any visa problems? Which travel company did you use? What stops did you make? Would you recommend those stops? What class did you take? What items would you take or not take? What time of the year did you make your trip?

If you went from Peking to Moscow, did you go via Manchuria or Mongolia? Which would you recommend?

Or if you went from Moscow to Peking, how did you arrive in Moscow - by train or by plane?

Is it safe? Do we have to pay small "gratuities" to get certain things done?

As you can see, we have a thousand and one questions!

Would truly appreciate any help you can give us!

I don't know if it will anser your questions but a site which IMHO is about the best rail travel site is:

http://www.seat61.com

It is written by rail travelers and is non commercial, I have used it often for informtaion.

The site is a good general overview of rail travel around the world, but incomplete on the topic of the Trans-Siberian or travel between Beijing and Moscow. Be very careful about the links to recommended ticket agents for tickets in Asia. Some of these are charging 70% more than you should pay.

JamesA: Thanks very much for that wonderful reference! I just visited it briefly and it seems to provide most of the information I would need for my planning. Thanks again!

PeterN: Appreciate your warning - can't be too careful! Thank you!

Garfield:

Thanks so much for the reference.

I have tried to download it twice, but can get only half the site to download. Do I just type in the URL or is there another trick to downloading this site?

Thanks again!
Jason
