Transportation Mongolia to China

I did a search for information on this forum but came up with nothing. Has anyone traveled from Ulaanbaatar to China recently?
We may be in Mongolia for a Habitat for Humanity build in July and would like to go to China and/or Tibet after.

I rode the Trans Mongolian train from Ulaan Baator to Beijing (with a stop off in Datong) a couple of years back. What do you want to know? Aside from the time it took to clear the frontier (and it was fascinating to watch the bogies (carriage wheels) changed) I enjoyed the ride. I traveled in second class (4 berths to a compartment, but this train also has deluxe sleepers with 2 berths, and a shared shower. There is a lot of info on this train on lonelyplanet.com's thorntree.

I imagine you can also do the trip by plane. And there is a recent discussion on this board on the train up to Lhasa.

I used Miat to/from UB/Beijing. I think the train would be interesting.

Thank you Thursdaysd. I will check Thorntree and come back if I have specific questions. Atravellyn, we will most likely be flying to Mongolia if this works out. I think you post most often on Africa, don't you? We got a lot of info for our Habitat build and short safari in Zambia & Zimbabwe there last year. Thanks!

Forgot to mention that the Trans-Mongolian only runs once a week. There's another Ulaan-Baator to Beijing train that runs once or twice a week without the deluxe coaches. You can also take a train to the border and a bus to Beijing. In other words, you need reservations! This is a popular route.

katt58,
Yes, usually on Africa forum. How wonderful you are "Habitatting" around the world!

There is at least one flight daily from UB to Beijing.

I did the bus/train combo about 5 years ago. Train from UB to the border. I crossed the border on a rickshaw. Then a bus to Beijing. Unless it has changed significantly, I recommend this route only if you are on an extremely tight budget or you are a hardcore traveler who is used to the rough side of Asia. It took me a week to cough out all the dust from my lungs after that ride.
