Train trips from Hong Kong
 

Any interesting trips into China from Hong Kong to be done in 3-4 days? Suggestions please.

There is a train to Shanghai. Also one to Beijing. (Try this: http://www.kcrc.com/eng/services/ser...itts_intro.asp - which is the official train service page)

Beijing will be more interesting - the old palace, the Great Wall, the Tiananmen Square.

But they only have 3-4 days. One-way to Shanghai or Beijing is about 30 hours by themselves.

When I was in Hong Kong about two years ago, I did a one day trip to Shenzhen and Guangzhou, on the southern tip of mainland China. You can do this without a Chinese visa, which I did not have. The trip to Shenzhen was by boat, then by bus up to Guangzho, then train back to Hong Kong that night. It at least gave me the opportunity to glimpse China (the scenery was spectacular). Our tour guides were excellent and spoke great English, and in one short day, we visited an outdoor market, a panda exhibit, had a family style Chinese luncheon, and visited two gorgeous temples. It was really worth the trip.

I booked this at the tour desk at the Salisbury YMCA in Kowloon when I got there. Highly recommend it.

Nowadays, American citizens absolutely need a Chinese visa before arriving at the border to go into the mainland, including Shenzhen.

I've done a similar trip as Ariliontiger. But we took a train Hk - Guangzhou (very comfortable, 3 hours), overnighted there then the next morning transferred by car Guanzhou-Shenzhen. We went to Shenzehn primarily to shop so did not do the sightseeing there - stopped at Windows of the World which I did not care for. Guangzhou was interesting for a day - we saw a BC temple, a war memorial park, had Hunan cuisine and enjoyed our day.
