Train question (probably the first of several :) )
Now that I'm back from the UK and a short jaunt to the Mendocino coast I need to start finalizing my November Kyoto/Tokyo trip.
I arrive at Narita in the late afternoon and will travel on to Kyoto that day. The train trips I need to book are Narita (via Tokyo?) to Kyoto. Kyoto to Tokyo. Tokyo to Narita. All within 7 days. Is the Rail Pass my best option? Or should I book point to point Tix?
(and if point to point are a little cheaper, would the added convenience still make the the Pass worthwhile?)

The 7 day JR Rail Pass will cover your trip from Narita to Kyoto and back at a cost of JPY 29110. Separate tickets would be JPY 31960 so you come out a little ahead with the pass and maybe you will make other use of it...JR trains in Tokyo and Kyoto, side trips....
imo you are best to transfer at Shinagawa - less confusing that Tokyo Station.

There is a cheaper method - with the Japanican discount E-voucher....that would be 21600 JPY plus 4000 JPY for the round trip ticket from Narita to Shinagawa on the N'Ex train. So you would save about 3500 yen.....
A little more complicated as you have to purchase the E-voucher at Shinagawa station at the travel agent.

Great - thanks for the super quick response.
Sounds like the JR pass makes sense (This is a short 'splurgy' trip so I think saving $29/¥3500 would probably be a false economy if the JR is simple)

I agree, the saving is not worthwhile. You would have to buy one ticket - the round trip N'Ex at NRT and then find the JR Tokai office at Shinagawa and get the other ticket - so now you will bring your JR Pass voucher to the ticket office in NRT and get the Pass and seat reservations you need to get to Kyoto.
Then you hop on the N'Ex and just change at Shinagawa...

Not sure if this will work in your case, but it's worth a try. We were also just in Japan for a very short time - I contacted the concierge at our hotel in Tokyo and she purchased the RT train tickets we needed. The tix were waiting for us when we arrived.
