We will be travelling to Bali in March and I was hoping that some people would share their favorite sights. We will be hiring Putu for a day or two so that we can tour around the Island? What are the must sees?

We will spend part of the time in the south and the other half in Ubud, so will not need to visit Ubud in a day trip.

Also my husband will be having a birthday while we are there and advice on unique excursions would be appreciated as I always surprise him with something new and exciting (last year was a trip through the rocky mountains in a helicopter....so now I am left trying to outshow last years experience...have thought of an over night trip to Borobudur)

All suggestions are welcomed and appreciated.

TL-I have a wonderful idea for a surprize for your husband in another year. My husband and I spent a month in Paris Cyprus and Turkey. The highlight was staying in a cave hotel in Cappadocia and taking a hot air balloon ride over the most facanating landscape you have ever seen.Chris

tl, Bali doesn't lend itself so much to Big Bang events. It's more internal and meditative.

Some of the things that I've liked most over the years:

Sailing on a catamaran

Trekking along the Ayung River

Attending a village dance performance lit only by torches

Going to an all-night village festival

Having a candle and star-lit dinner for two on a cliff overlooking the sea

Commissioning a dance mask from one of the last great masters

Watching the sunrise over Mt Agung

Something I recently did that I'd recommend to all you jewelry-philes:

Visit the John Hardy workshop and showroom in the Ubud area. John Hardy is a worldclass jeweler who deals mostly in semi-precious stones. You can buy his stuff at a 40-50% discount off US retail prices (WARNING: IT'S STILL VERY PRICY!) and have lunch with his whole team in a lovely tropical setting. You have to call to make an appointment.

Borobudur is also a magnificent experience, but it's not so easy to get to from Bali so I'd only recommend it if you have 2 or 3 extra days.

Thanks for these wonderful replies. Many of your suggestions sound great and I will look them over. If we did go to Borobudur, I would definitely spend 2 days, as I know we would have to fly out.

One of my most favorite things to do in Bali is rafting near Ubud, but I'm not sure that would compare to a helicopter ride.

Another thing I think is not to be missed is the Kecak dance at Ulu Watu. The setting is spectacular and the performance is supposed to be one of the more authentic.

Still on my to-do list is Lake Bratan and Singaraja.
