Tokyo Hotels with kids
Greetings. Our family of five (wife, myself and three boys 2, 5, 12) will be traveling to Tokyo in March and we've noticed that all the hotel rooms are listed as 3 occupants max (even the suites). If we were to book a double or triple, would the hotel force us to book a 2nd room when we showed up (or even charge for the extra child)? We are used to staying in a double and having the kids sleep on the couch/floors etc, but are concerned that the Japanese culture may differ. Any advise would be appreciated.

I think you will find that outside of North America and Aus/NZ it is very difficult to find hotel rooms that will fit a family of 5. You might find a Ryokan that might fit you but I doubt it. I would plan on getting two rooms.

You might want to look at the former Mansions at Roppogni, now called the Oakwood Apartments Roppogni Central and owned by Oakwood. They have two bedroom suites that also have a sofa bed in the living area, and can sleep 5. Also includes kitchen and washer/dryer. Check the reviews at tripadvisor.com

The two bedroom units at Roppongi would be perfect, or another option is to get a Japanese style room in a smaller hotel. The 2 and 5 yr olds will be cheaper, and all of you can be on futons in one room. Western style rooms are usually very small, and I dont think they'll let you get away with 5 in a room for 3.

Another option would be to stay at the International youth hostel at Iidaybashi. You can get a nice family room with 4 large bunk type beds and a table with killer views of Tokyo.
The bathroom is japanese stylewith a big bath. There are washing machines and you can purchase breakfast and dinner if you don't want to go out. the lobbies will have lots of young people, mostly japanese and foreign school groups, so your kids might enjoy that.
I really liked the area..very interesting to walk around, and you're on top of both the JR station and a subway station. A couple years ago it was about 40$ for adults and reduced for kids.
