Tokyo hotels- need advise

I will be in Tokyo at end of August for 4 nights. I have done some research, and narrow down to these 2 hotels:
- Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo in Shinjuku
- Hotel Monterey Ginza

I need to stay in a place that meets these criteria:
- quick easy access to JR/local metro
- near local moderately priced restaurants
- near shoppings
- easy access from Narita airport

Please provide any comments. Thanks

I have stayed in and liked the Keio Plaza Hotel in Shinjuku. It would fit all of your criteria.

Five minute walk to JR Shinjuku Station
Tons of restaurants around and in the hotel
Some of the best shopping in Tokyo is located in the blocks surrounding the Keio
The Airport Limo Bus has direct door to door service to the Keio

We enjoyed our stay at the Keio Plaza and can recommend them without hesitation

A little information of the surrounding area

Maybe I walk much slower than HT, but I think Keio Plaza is more like 10min walk to Shinjuku. Monterey Ginza is also 10min to JR station, 5min to Metro.

Shinjuku wins for moderately priced restaurants. Both are near shopping (of slightly different caliber).

Access to Narita is a close call: Keio Plaza has direct limousine bus as well as Narita Express from Shinjuku Stn. But Monterey is on the eastern end of central Tokyo loop so less risk of traffic jam on highway, and you can catch a taxi to TCAT (around JPY1500) which has frequent and non-stop limousine bus services.

You may also want to consider the Marunouchi Hotel which sits atop Tokyo station. Very nice hotel, reasonable prices and because of the train station you would have great access to any train line and to lots of reasonable restaurants right in the train station and some of the adjacent buildings. We took the train from Narita straight to Tokyo station and walked underground about a block to the hotel lobby. Very easy. It's also a short walk to the Imperial Palace and gardens. Keio near Shinjuku is also a very good choice. Marunouchi is a bit quieter than Shinjuku where you will find a plethora of shops and restaurants but both are great choices imo.

Would I be better off to stay in Shinjuku or Shinagawa as we are catching the train the next day to Kyoto. We are getting in to Narita about 9pm and will probably not be doing too much short of dinner, walk around a bit and then bed.

We stayed 4 nights in June at the Meridian Pacific directly across from the Shinagawa train station. Everything was perfect, especially the buffet breakfast at Piccolo Mondo ($25.00). The location was great ! We used the Narita Express from the airport to Shinagawa, and left on the bullet train. We are planning on staying there again next trip.

jason 316,

Shinagawa (on the south tip of Yamanote loop) is more conveniently located than Shinjuku if you need to take the bullet train.

jason316, if you choose Shinagawa (good choice) then you should plan on taking a limo bus from the airport to your hotel, door to door. The last Narita Express is at 9:43PM.

If you have to exchange a voucher for a JR Pass then you can do it at Shinagawa station.
