Tokyo hotel - very confused!
Hi, I am just so undecided about location for 5 days in Tokyo. To Ginza or not to Ginza?
We want easy walking, restaurants, buzz for our 11 yr old daughter. Very flexible budget. Conrad gets amazing reviews, as does Grand Hyatt. Is the Sofitel too far "out" location wise? Roppongi looks a bit full on for us. Also, we could share with our kid if twin-bedded means 2 queen size beds, but I have sneaking suspician it means 2 single size beds, is this right? thanks in advance many thanks for all your help |
I do not claim to know Tokyo very well at all, but my thoughts on the Conrad are as follows. I have stayed there 3 times recently and find it very good in many ways; all these have been business trips with a little tourism tacked on. It is walkable to the fish market, which is actually a very interesting sight and probably one of the things you will do anyway. It is in front of Hama Rikyu Garden and park, which is a very nice park and would be a good break for your daughter, and again is one of the places you might visit anyway. It is basically also in front of the ferry piers which you can take up the river to get to the interesting Asakusa area and the Sensoji temple; which is IMO a very good way to get there and then you do not have to take the subway, which is not only confusing but the ferry is a much prettier way (I am not a mole). There is a subway stop quite close by. It is very close to the main train station to the airport, less than 10 minutes by taxi.
It is a lovely hotel and has very good views of Tokyo Bay. It has an indoor pool which your daughter may find useful and a very nice gym. I think you should ask about their suites, as these have a separate living area with a sofa (may be a sofa bed, I have not checked it) which you daughter could easily sleep on or they could provide you with a roll away. They may even have junior suites which would be less expensive than suits, but larger than their standard rooms, but their standard rooms are 48 square meters which is a very large room and could easily take a roll away with your husband and you in the king bed. I agree that a twin bedded room more than likely means two twin beds. (I see from the Grand Hyatt website that their standard rooms are 42 square meters, which is also a good size, and they have "Grand Deluxe" rooms which are 55 square meters, these would be a very good choice as they could very easily take a roll away. I don't know this hotel other than Italian restaurant, which is good.) Now, the drawback is that the hotel is not really in any type of neighborhood with restaurants and does not seem to be near any mall with restaurants, at least none that I have found. It is in an area which was somewhat industrial until recently I believe and is somewhat sterile with a lot of new tall office buildings and not even a whole lot of sidewalks. However, it is not far by taxi to the Ginza area or even to Roppongi, I would say less than 10 minutes to the Ginza and probably 15-20 to Roppongi. I find both the Ginza and Roppongi areas to be a little crazy with all the traffic and all the neon in the Ginza, but you may find it exiting, I don't' know. I live in Hong Kong and get plenty of that. I also don't find anywhere in Tokyo to be "easy walking". It is just too spread out for that. Once you get to the Ginza you can certainly walk along parts, and I like the area around the Roppongi Hills shopping centre, but really I find it just hard to get around on foot in that city other than within confined neighborhoods. |
thanks for the input cicerone.

We just finished a 5 night stay at the Renaissance Ginza Tobu and found it acceptable for shopping, subway access (to get to Harajuku for your daughter's enjoyment, among other places), Tsukiji Fish Market, and restaurants. I haven't stayed at the Conrad or Grand Hyatt but would suspect the Ginza Tobu is a notch less elegant than they are. That said, we were satisfied with our room and pleased to be staying in Ginza for the easy access it afforded to the various things we wanted to see.

FYI, Ren. Ginza Tobu is available on Club Tocoo (a discount hotel service for Japan; a friend who has used this site successfully recently turned me on to that site) for 13506 for twin and same price for a double.
http://www2.tocoo.jp/english/ I came very close to booking that hotel on my last trip, but ended up using starwood points for a free stay at the Westin. BTW, the Westin one of the top 3 best hotels I have stayed at anywhere in the world. It's amazing. Easy access to the JR Yamonate loop train that goes all around Tokyo, and many restaurants between the hotel and station (7 min. walk, under cover on moving sidewalks) and also on the other side of the station. |
