Tokyo Economical Lodging - Please help?
 

Hi -

I am planning to be in Japan for much of July and need to find a place to live.

I have been investigating Guest Houses. It has been very confusing. I am looking to have a private bedroom, and a bathroom that i will share, but hopefully not with the entire building.

Is a guest house the right avenue? Any recommendations or suggestions would be VERY helpful.

As of now, I am focused in the area of SHINJYUKU.

You can try guest houses, which are normally a modern ryokan with a communal Japanese bath, showers, with some rooms with private bathroom.
The mainstay of budget accommodation in Japan is business hotels, which provide well-equipped, clean, mainly single rooms, though rooms tend to be tiny. There are many chains, such as reliable Toyoko Inn, Hotel Sunroute, Hokke Club, Washington Hotel, Marroad Inn. Most can be booked online in English.

You might want something like what is referred to as a gaijin house, of which there are many, many in Tokyo.

A useful site for budget accommodation http://www.hostelworld.com/hostels/Tokyo we stayed at http://www.andon.co.jp/ for a week and really enjoyed it - small rooms with shared bathrooms on each floor and a jacuzzi that you could book out. It was in Ueno rather than Shinjuku but close to the station and convenient for getting around
